Arizona ND Founders' Day

Greetings again, Sisters

It's Judy Kimbrough, "snowtopped"  President of AZ Alpha Beta, here seeking to have a sisters join us at our end of the state on October 12 for 2019 Founders' Day at the historic St. Michaels Mission in St. Michaels, AZ which is located 3 miles west of Window Rock on Hiway 264 where if we are lucky the giant trees surrounding the mission will be turning.

Alpha Beta has been busy planning and rehearsing and preparing to host a gala event to officially celebrate Founders' Day, 2019 in Northern District. We  encourage you to bring guests. We will have prospective members as well as our State Board joining our festivities. The Northern District and AZ Alpha Delta Kappa has much to celebrate.

Getting to the site is easy. I40 east to the Lupton turnoff (NN12) then north to AZ 264 then west about a mile to the valley housing the beautiful mission built in the 1800s welcoming you majestically from its knoll above the garden that supplies the mission manned by the Franciscan brothers there. It's closer than Gallup by 25 miles and only 29 miles from Gallup via Hiway 264.

Our meeting place can accommodate up to a hundred, I'm told. I'll be HAPPY DANCING for months if my northern district family and surrounding area rounds us out to forty. I didn't realize how small our district really is in number which is all the more reason for us to take every opportunity to bond as a district. It was a Founders' Day at Cottonwood in a clubhouse among the cottonwoods that launched my personal dedication to Alpha Delta Kappa in 1982. That Founders' Day made me want to know Alpha Delta Kappa and my AZ sisters sooooo much better. I've only missed 2--when I broke my ankle and when my husband was recovering from very serious surgery. Mingling with you envigorates me and makes me love our sisterhood even more.

There is the Navajo Nation Inn and Suites in St. Michaels that has given us a $79 rate for two beds. We're only 25 miles east of historic Hubbells Trading Post and 3 miles west of the beautiful Window Rock Park with its Code Talkers Memorial.  Canyon de Chelley is 70 miles northwest. And our valley is coooooooler, maybe not cooler than Flagstaff though. The Navajo Nation Arts and Crafts and the Navajo Nation Museum are only 3 miles down the road near stateline. Narbona Pass is just up the road 40 miles where the leaves really turn.

What I seek from you today your registration that you will indeed join us on October 12th. A PDF and a Word Doc registration form is attached.

AZ Alpha Lambda has been asked to present the Founders' Day Program and 3 doorprizes. AZ Pi, AZ Fidelis Delta, and AZ Alpha Zeta is requested to provide 5 doorprizes each. Alpha Beta members who will be on travel have been asked to donate $15 each toward the altruistic project and buying area specific doorprizes.

We will have lots of space for your sales table.

Nedy, shown with me below, is our first timer who had a great time in Minneapolis singing in the choir and appearing on the front page of the KAPPAN with Int'l President Sue, as well as at Northern District Founders' Day 2018; we are both waiting to hear from you. She loves Alpha Delta Kappa and we both as well as all Alpha Betans  are eager to share our fraternal love with each of you as we celebrate the 73 anniversary of Alpha Delta Kappa and its founders.

Now don't you forget.........October, it's an Alpha Delta Kappa thing! for all of us.

NW/SW Regional Conference

Greetings, all,

Here is a flyer with details on booking with Alaska Airlines, if you are interested.  It is a 5% discount on most flights (not all).  You may or may not be able to beat it, but every little bit helps.  Looking forward to being with you all in Anchorage next July!!

Please let me know if you have any questions.  The travel dates for the discount end July 15th, not great.  We have asked for a 2nd code with travel dates shifted to a few days later in July (I know of many leaving the 16th); they couldn't just shift these dates as it was already 'in the system'; it will take another 2 weeks to get a 2nd code.  Hoops.

International Vice-President of the Southwest Region

August 13, 2017

Dear sisters of the Southwest,

I am so honored to have been elected International Vice-president of the Southwest  Region.  I would not be here were it not for the leadership and mentoring of so many sisters along the way.  I wish to particularly thank Ann Marie Brown, Immediate Past SW IVP, and now Chairman of the International Executive Board, for her support and guidance.  Having her as a resource is invaluable!

I want to offer my support to you as state leaders as well.  I certainly don’t know all of the answers, but I will do my best to find them for you!  Many of you know that technology is an interest of mine; if I can assist you in tackling Google Apps or putting a newsletter together, please ask.  I also served as a state convention chairman twice and enjoy the challenges of putting it all together.  I’m happy to be a sounding board if you need.  Thank you, State Presidents, for providing the information on those flash drives.  It helps me to become more familiar with the states in our region.  Did you know there are actually 9 states, including Queensland and Victoria in Australia?  I’m thrilled that I will be attending most of our state conventions this coming Spring, so that I may give you all a hug in person!

Our International Convention in New Orleans was amazing!  New International President Sue Pelchat’s theme of ENERGY, OPPORTUNITY, IMPACT is a challenge to us all to do our part as individual members to keep Alpha Delta Kappa a vibrant organization which offers many opportunities for our members and has a positive impact on our communities locally and globally.  Speaking of energy, opportunity and impact, I am so grateful to the sisters who have said ‘yes’ when asked to serve at the Regional level.  The list is attached; I am still in search of a Regional Historian and a Distinguished Program Award Chairman.  I’d love it if you could suggest names to me!  Serving our region really IS an opportunity to have an impact!

SAVE THE DATES!  The Joint Northwest Southwest Regional Conference will be July 9th - 11th, 2018 in Anchorage, Alaska.  I know this will be an outstanding leadership and personal growth  opportunity, plus seeing and learning about the native beauty of Alaska.  Our planning team is making its first visit to Anchorage in September; more details will follow when we return!  I am immensely grateful to NW IVP Glad Loreen, NW Conference Chair Helen Foster, SW Conference Chair Mary Ann Englehart, Alaska State President Nancy Dreydoppel, and California State President Diana Galvan.  California is the SW co-host of the conference; we are energized and excited for this opportunity!

Below are a number of deadlines; please PROMOTE SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS!  They may all be found on the International website under Member Center/Scholarships and Grants.  I am also attaching a synopsis of the Scholarships and Grants that are due in the next few months taken from information on the state website.  Please SHARE that information - keep reminding your chapters!  Not enough sisters are taking advantage of these opportunities!  These are concrete ways we can impact our sisters, their students, and their communities.

  • August 31st - Chapter Needs Assessment (CNA - available on the International website; may be completed online) due to your State Membership Chairman and SW Region Membership Chairman Betty Jo Evers (bettyevers@aol.com).

  • December 31st - S/P/N Membership Consultant’s Report To Regional Membership Consultant due to RMC-SW Betty Jo Evers. Copies to S/P/N President, S/P/N President-Elect, and Immediate Past S/P/N President

More information will be coming your way soon.  Please let me know how I can help you.  I am here to serve YOU! If you have difficulty viewing the attachments, let me know -n these are Google docs. If you have a Google account, you may go to File/Make a Copy and the document becomes yours to edit (copy information to use elsewhere). If you need it in another form, let me know. This is an opportunity, right?!

With gratitude and appreciation,

Mollie

Due August 31!

Distinguished Program Award

A new format for sharing excellent chapter programming ideas has been established through the Distinguished Program Award (DPA), formerly the Annual Program Award.  The DPA is designed to recognize chapters with outstanding programs that promote involvement and attendance of members, plus attract the attention of prospective members through creativity and uniqueness.  I have attached the form which provides information about the DPA and the parameters for submitting an entry.  Entries must be submitted by August 31st to your IVP, SWR, Mollie Acosta, at adk.mollie@gmail.com.  Each chapter may submit one program from their 2016-2017 chapter meetings.  The chapter receiving the Distinguished Program Award will be notified by December 1st.

This is a great way for chapters to gain recognition for successful programs, and to also raise awareness among all chapters that such an award exists!  I will let you know when I receive an application from a chapter in your state so that you may acknowledge and congratulate the chapter for submitting an application.  I forward the applications to our regional chairman for adjudication; the top 5 selected are forwarded to a different region for final adjudication.  If you have any suggestions, I welcome them. Please let me know if you have any difficulty with the documents.

More to come soon!  Thank you for ALL you do for the Southwest’s sisters.  We are Sisters Who Make a Difference!

Much love,

Mollie
